How to Set Up Shipping on Shopify (Without the Headaches)
Alright, so you're selling online, and specifically, you're using Shopify. Great platform, right? But let's be real - there's one thing on there that can get pretty annoying.
Yep, I’m talking about setting up those shipping profiles.
Whether you’re shipping to different countries or just trying to figure out regional shipping rates, it can get messy fast.
But don’t sweat it - this video’s got you covered.
We’re diving into everything you need to know about shipping profiles so you can get orders out the door as quickly as possible. Sound good? Alright, let’s get into it and by the way, if you prefer to listen rather than read, check out my podcast here.
The Five Shipping Methods for Your Shopify Store
1. Free Shipping
Let’s start with the crowd favorite: free shipping. This is the money-maker. Everyone loves free shipping - it’s like a magic word.
You slap “free shipping” on your store, and boom, your chances of closing a sale shoot up.
But here’s the kicker: it’s not actually free.
You’re just rolling that shipping cost into your product price. Simple math.
Say your item costs $25 and shipping is $6. Instead of charging $25 + $6, you charge $31. Customers see “free shipping” and they’re sold.
2. Single Flat Rate Shipping
Next up, we’ve got single flat rate shipping.
This is where you charge a fixed price for all your shipments - easy and predictable. Whether it’s $5, $10, or $20, you’re in control.
Now, this method can have some downsides.
Different destinations cost different amounts to ship, and carriers change their rates all the time.
So, make sure you’re setting a flat rate that covers your costs without surprising your customers.
3. Tiered Flat Rate Shipping
If you want to mix it up, try tiered flat rate shipping. This method lets you charge different rates depending on the total order value. For example:
Orders from $1–$50? Charge $10.
Orders $51–$100? Charge $5.
Orders over $100? Free shipping.
You can also tier it by weight or quantity if that works better for your products.
4. Per Item Shipping Rates
For stores with a variety of product sizes and weights, per item shipping rates are the way to go.
Light items, like a pencil case? Maybe $3 for shipping.
Heavy items, like reams of paper? $10 or more.
This keeps your pricing fair and helps you avoid losing money on bulky or heavy items.
5. Advanced Shipping Rates
Finally, there’s advanced shipping rates. If you’re working with multiple suppliers or carriers (think USPS, FedEx, DHL), this is your go-to. Shopify can calculate rates automatically based on the carrier and location.
Setting Up Shipping Profiles on Shopify
Alright, now that you know the methods, let’s actually set up those shipping profiles.
Step 1: Log In to Shopify
First things first, log in to your Shopify account. Don’t have one? No problem—start your trial for just $1 for 3 months.
Step 2: Find the Shipping Settings
Once you’re in, head over to your shipping settings. Two ways to do this:
Use the search bar—just type “shipping.”
Or, click Settings on the left-hand menu, then Shipping and Delivery.
Now you’re in the right place to manage your shipping profiles.
Step 3: Create a Shipping Zone
Next, create your first shipping zone.
Let’s say you’re only shipping to the U.S. for now.
Name your zone “United States Shipping,” select the U.S. from the list, and you’re good to go.
Want to ship internationally? No problem.
Just add more countries to your zone, like Australia, Canada, or the UK.
Step 4: Add Your Rates
Here’s where it gets interesting. You’ve got two options:
Set your own rates: Want to charge $10 flat? Go for it.
Use carrier rates: Let Shopify calculate rates based on the carrier and destination.
You can also mix and match. For example:
Orders under $50: Charge $15 shipping.
Orders over $50: Free shipping.
Or maybe you want to charge based on weight. Shopify’s got you covered there, too.
